Berchem - Dead Man Ray
Dead Man Ray was one of the most promising new bands in Belgium in 1998.
That year they released their first album, and it was a damn good one.
I like the sound of this group - it's in a way very reminiscent to '80s
(European) new wave music. I can't explain it, so you have to buy the album
to understand me :-)
It opens with the first single 'Beegee'. I had noticed this
song hanging around in the shades of the national pop-charts. I had never heard of this
band before and I even thought it was a new British band influenced by Belgian pop music.
Soon I picked up the bands name being Dead Man Ray, typical American. As soon as the album
was released, I bought it. It puzzled me that an American band named their album after a
small Belgian city near Antwerp: 'Berchem'. Of course when I saw the credits...
I was happy to see Belgian pop music had made another beautiful touch down.
Songs like 'Chemical' (with a highly musical alarm clock in it),
'Bones' or 'Perfo' make me smile,
and 'Bread' is the most beautiful song I noticed in '98. All
songs explore in an entertaining way the Musical Adventure. Sometimes it sounds like the
guys know every little sound in the world and know how to use it sparingly to spice the songs.
It's an album that captivates your attention most of the times - even pleasantly surprises
you every now and then. It makes me proud to be Belgian.
